People associated it with outdated interior decorating and wanted to avoid it as much as possible.\u00a0 Wallpaper was stylistically out-of-date and considered hard to remove and maintain.\u00a0 People who bought homes with wallpaper were likely to sigh at the amount of effort required to get rid of it.<\/p>\n<p>But, then, things changed.\u00a0 The Boston Globe <a class=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/ideas\/2012\/06\/23\/whatever-happened-wallpaper\/jXOhGd4bsUNWD1CGJeqLwJ\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lamented the decline of wallpaper in 2012<\/a>.\u00a0 Just a few years later, the Washington Post declared that it was <a class=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/home\/wallpaper-is-making-a-big-comeback-heres-how-to-choose-use-and-remove\/2017\/02\/28\/c9b2eb40-f88a-11e6-9845-576c69081518_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">making a huge comeback<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly enough, the Washington Post story wasn\u2019t talking so much about traditional wallpaper \u2014 the stuff that might have covered the walls of your grandmother\u2019s living room \u2014 but instead was describing wall murals.\u00a0 The Post noted that modern \u201cwallpaper\u201d was likely to be used as an accent and to be digitally printed.\u00a0 So what\u2019s the difference between wallpaper and wall murals?\u00a0 If you\u2019re decorating a home, office or another interior, which one should you choose?<\/p>\n<h2>WALLPAPER VS. WALL MURALS: MATERIAL USED<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy img-responsive aligncenter size-full wp-image-7027 lazy-loaded\" src=\"https:\/\/www.speedpro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/2-vinyl.jpg\" alt=\"Vinyl wall murals are made with cast or calendared vinyl\" width=\"870\" height=\"303\" data-lazy-type=\"image\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.speedpro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/2-vinyl.jpg\" data-lazy-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.speedpro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/2-vinyl.jpg 870w, https:\/\/www.speedpro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/2-vinyl-300x104.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.speedpro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/2-vinyl-768x267.jpg 768w\" data-lazy-sizes=\"(max-width: 870px) 100vw, 870px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One considerable difference between wallpaper and wall murals is the type of material used to make them.\u00a0 Both wallpaper and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.speedpro.com\/products-services\/wall-murals\/\">wall murals<\/a> can be made using a variety of materials.\u00a0 The types of material a wall mural might be made out of include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Vinyl: <\/strong>\u00a0Two materials are often used to produce vinyl wall murals.\u00a0 Cast vinyl is a thin material that can provide bright, vibrant colors.\u00a0 Calendared vinyl is slightly thicker and better suited for larger walls.\u00a0 Cast vinyl\u2019s thinness allows it to turn corners or wrap around columns a bit better than calendared vinyl.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Photo paper: <\/strong>\u00a0Photo paper is a type of paper that has a light-sensitive coating on top of it.\u00a0 The coating allows the paper to produce photographic prints.\u00a0 Photo paper is ideal for interior wall murals with a photographic print or pattern.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Canvas:<\/strong>\u00a0 Canvas is a type of fabric, usually made from cotton or a cotton\/polyester blend.\u00a0 Unlike vinyl or photo paper, which tend to be smooth, canvas gives a wall mural a bit of texture.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Perforated window film:<\/strong>\u00a0 As you might guess, perforated window film is used to produce wall murals that are meant to be hung on glass surfaces.\u00a0 It can be used on windows or on walls made from glass.\u00a0 The perforations let the light shine through.\u00a0 Also, it\u2019s possible to still see out of the glass from one side when the window film is used.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Polyester\u00a0<\/strong><strong>or Mylar: <\/strong>\u00a0Polyester or Mylar \u2014 a type of polyester \u2014 are often used to create outdoor wall murals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There is some overlap between the type of materials used to create wallpaper and the materials used for wall murals.\u00a0 Some of the types of material you might find wallpaper made from include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Lining paper:<\/strong>\u00a0 Lining paper wallpaper is the \u201cno-frills\u201d wallpaper.\u00a0 It\u2019s usually unprinted and plain.\u00a0 Its purpose is more to cover up imperfections in a wall rather than to add visual interest to the wall.\u00a0 It\u2019s traditionally painted or covered over with another type of wallpaper.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cellulose:<\/strong>\u00a0 Traditional wallpapers tend to be made of cellulose, a breathable material that isn\u2019t water-resistant.\u00a0 The inks used on cellulose wallpaper tend to fade when exposed to sunlight.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Grasscloth: <\/strong>\u00a0Grasscloth is made of a type of natural fiber, such as bamboo or hemp, which is pasted onto rice paper.\u00a0 Grasscloth wallpaper <a class=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nshoremag.com\/northshore-home\/considering-grasscloth-heres-what-you-should-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">typically comes in 36-inch rolls<\/a>.\u00a0 It\u2019s not water-resistant and has a reputation for being more challenging to care for compared to other materials.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vinyl-coated paper or fabric:<\/strong>\u00a0 Vinyl-coated wallpaper is more water-resistant than plain paper or cellulose options.\u00a0 It\u2019s typically used in areas that have high humidity, such as bathrooms or kitchens.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vinyl: <\/strong>\u00a0Like a wall mural, wallpaper can also be made of vinyl.\u00a0 Vinyl wallpaper is very durable, water-resistant and easy to clean.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Velvet-flocked paper: <\/strong>\u00a0Some types of wallpaper have a velvety coating, which gives the surface a soft, fuzzy feel.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Foil: <\/strong>\u00a0If you\u2019ve ever seen shiny wallpaper, you\u2019ve witnessed foil wallpaper in action.\u00a0 Foil wallpaper typically needs to be used along with lining paper, as it is thinner than other materials.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Non-woven: <\/strong>\u00a0Non-woven wallpaper is made from a mix of natural and synthetic materials.\u00a0 It\u2019s meant to be a more eco-friendly alternative to vinyl wallpaper.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>WALLPAPER VS. WALL MURAL: USES AND LOCATIONS<\/h2>\n<p>Another notable difference between wallpaper and wall murals is where they are used.\u00a0 You might cover all four walls of a room, and even the ceiling, with wallpaper.\u00a0 However, it\u2019s unlikely that you would put a wall mural on the four walls of a room.\u00a0 Usually, wall murals are used on a single wall.\u00a0 They are meant to be an eye-catching accent.<\/p>\n<p>The goal of wallpaper is also somewhat different from the purpose of a wall mural.\u00a0 Wall murals can be used as advertisements, which is why you sometimes see them outdoors.\u00a0 Even when used indoors, a brand mural can advertise a company or product.<\/p>\n<p>Typically, wallpaper can add visual interest to a room or tie together a design.\u00a0 But it\u2019s not going to be the focal point of a room, the way a large wall mural might be.<\/p>\n<p>Some places where you might use wallpaper include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In a bathroom at home<\/li>\n<li>In a kitchen<\/li>\n<li>In a living room<\/li>\n<li>In an office or conference room<\/li>\n<li>In a closet<\/li>\n<li>In a dining room<\/li>\n<li>In a bedroom<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some places where you might hang up a wall mural include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In the waiting room of a business<\/li>\n<li>In a conference room<\/li>\n<li>In a living room, on one wall<\/li>\n<li>In a dining room, on one wall<\/li>\n<li>In a cafe or restaurant<\/li>\n<li>In a store<\/li>\n<li>In a shopping mall<\/li>\n<li>On the outside of a building<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One thing worth noting is that wallpaper isn\u2019t limited to use on the walls.\u00a0 Some people have gotten creative and used pieces of wallpaper to line dresser drawers.\u00a0 You can also cut a piece of wallpaper to fit in a frame and hang it on the wall as a decorative object.\u00a0 Because the design scale of a wall mural is usually much larger than the size of the pattern on wallpaper, you can\u2019t do the same with a mural.<\/p>\n<h2>WALLPAPER VS. WALL MURAL: APPLICATION PROCESS<\/h2>\n<p>The application process for wallpaper is slightly different from the process of installing a wall mural.\u00a0 How you hang wallpaper depends on the type of paper you\u2019re using.\u00a0 There are a few different ways to apply wallpaper, some of which are trickier than others.<\/p>\n<p>No matter what type of wall covering you\u2019re installing, the first step is usually to prepare the wall for the paper.\u00a0 How much prep work you need to do depends in large part on the condition of the walls.\u00a0 You might need to remove existing wallpaper so that the new paper goes on cleanly and smoothly.\u00a0 If the walls are painted, you\u2019ll want to wipe them down with water, then let dry.<\/p>\n<p>Next, sand the walls to smooth them down and remove any bumps.\u00a0 If there are dents or holes in the wall, you\u2019ll want to fill them in with drywall compound, let dry for 24 hours, then sand down.\u00a0 Once you\u2019ve sanded the walls, wipe them with a damp sponge again and let dry overnight.<\/p>\n<p>The last prep step is to apply a coat of primer to the walls you\u2019re about to wallpaper, then let it dry for several hours.\u00a0 Now, you\u2019re ready to get started.<\/p>\n<h3>1. APPLYING WALLPAPER<\/h3>\n<p>How much work is involved when hanging wallpaper depends on whether it\u2019s self-adhesive \u2014 also called \u201cpeel-and-stick\u201d \u2014 or not.\u00a0 If the wallpaper isn\u2019t self-adhesive, you\u2019ll need to smooth it out and spread it out on a flat surface, such as a work surface.\u00a0 The wallpaper needs to be completely flat.\u00a0 Next, you\u2019ll need to coat the back of the wallpaper with the adhesive, using a figure-eight pattern.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy img-responsive aligncenter size-full wp-image-7023 lazy-loaded\" src=\"https:\/\/www.speedpro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/3-wallpaper-work.jpg\" alt=\"The amount of work required for installation depends on the adhesive.\" width=\"871\" height=\"405\" data-lazy-type=\"image\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.speedpro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/3-wallpaper-work.jpg\" data-lazy-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.speedpro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/3-wallpaper-work.jpg 871w, https:\/\/www.speedpro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/3-wallpaper-work-300x139.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.speedpro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/3-wallpaper-work-768x357.jpg 768w\" data-lazy-sizes=\"(max-width: 871px) 100vw, 871px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a good idea to cut the wallpaper so it\u2019s a few inches longer than the height of the wall.\u00a0 Leave the extra inches uncovered with adhesive, so that you can pick it up easily.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve covered the back of the paper with the adhesive, carefully pick it up and smooth it onto the wall.\u00a0 To make sure you get rid of all the air bubbles, use a smoothing brush.\u00a0 Use a knife to trim away the excess wallpaper on the top or bottom.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re working with self-adhesive wallpaper, you get to skip the step of painting the adhesive onto the back of the paper.\u00a0 Instead, cut the wallpaper to the desired length, then position it on the wall, starting from the top.\u00a0 Remove the backing, then smooth the paper onto the wall.\u00a0 Use a plastic squeegee to push out any air bubbles.<\/p>\n<h3>2. APPLYING A WALL MURAL<\/h3>\n<p>The process of applying a wall mural is similar to that of applying peel-and-stick wallpaper.\u00a0 Start with a wall that\u2019s clean and smooth.\u00a0 Lay the mural face down on a flat, clear surface.\u00a0 If the mural is large enough, you might have multiple panels.\u00a0 Arrange the panels in the right order on the clear surface.<\/p>\n<p>Next, remove the backing from the wall mural or wall mural panels.\u00a0 Pick up the first panel and position it against the wall.\u00a0 Smooth the panel into place.\u00a0 Repeat with any remaining panels.<\/p>\n<p>Use a squeegee to remove air bubbles from the mural and to attach firmly it to the wall.\u00a0 Start in the center of the mural and work your way upward.\u00a0 Once you\u2019ve squeegeed the upper half of the mural, repeat the process.\u00a0 Start from the center and work your way downward.<\/p>\n<h3>3. WALL MURAL: DESIGNS<\/h2>\n<p>The design you\u2019ll find on wallpaper is often considerably different from the designs used to create wall murals.\u00a0 Typically, custom wallpaper isn\u2019t an option.\u00a0 The patterns available on wallpaper are usually mass-produced and readily available for purchase at stores.<\/p>\n<p>Wall murals, on the other hand, often do feature custom designs.\u00a0 You can create a wall mural from a photograph or image that your company provides.\u00a0 You can also design your wall mural using your company\u2019s logo or colors.<\/p>\n<p>The scale of the design differs between wall murals and wallpaper.\u00a0 You\u2019re likely to see smaller scale, repeating patterns on wallpaper.\u00a0 Designs such as fleur-de-lis, stripes, florals and dots are all familiar.\u00a0 While you can use small-scale patterns as part of a wall mural, it\u2019s more likely that case that a mural will have a bigger design.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the design of a mural might be an enlarged image of horses running across a river or a life-size or larger-than-life photo of a group of people.\u00a0 A mural might have large lettering that spells out a brand\u2019s name or a family\u2019s name, or it might have a slogan or quote.<\/p>\n<p>How the design is arranged also differs between wallpaper and a wall mural.\u00a0 Depending on the size of the mural, the entire design might fit on a single panel.\u00a0 If the mural is very large, a portion of the design might appear on one panel, the next part on the second panel and the remainder on a third.\u00a0 Usually, wallpaper is sold by the roll, and each roll of a design is identical.<\/p>\n<h2>WALLPAPER VS.
