A-frame signs come in three main styles. Plastic Signicade-style frames are the lightweight retail standard with weighted bases, ideal for daily-specials use. Spring-loaded steel wind-master frames flex in wind rather than blowing over, perfect for exposed corners and Lake Michigan locations. Custom wood frames suit rustic venues like wedding farms and taprooms. A-frames work hardest in walkable commercial districts where pedestrian traffic converts to foot traffic in the door. The key is a clear message, weather-rated panels, and a frame style that matches the wind exposure at your location.
Different from sidewalk graphics. An A-frame is a portable sandwich board you set out in the morning and bring in at close. A printed sidewalk graphic is a vinyl decal bonded directly to the concrete with anti-skid laminate. A-frames are changeable and seasonal. Sidewalk graphics are permanent to semi-permanent.
Permit awareness in Chicago. Chicago and many suburban municipalities including Naperville, Hinsdale, and Oak Park regulate sidewalk A-frames through permit programs and pedestrian-clearance rules. Common requirement: 5- to 6-foot minimum clearance from the sign edge to the curb. Confirm with your local permit office before deploying.

A standard 24 by 36 inch plastic A-frame with full-color coroplast panels typically runs $150 to $250. Spring-loaded metal wind-master A-frames start around $250 and run to $450. Custom wood A-frames start around $300 and run to $700 or more.
How do A-frame signs hold up in Chicago wind?
Standard plastic A-frames should be ballasted with sand or water for exposed locations. For windy corners or near Lake Michigan, switch to spring-loaded steel A-frames that flex at the top hinge. In gusts over 25 mph we recommend bringing any A-frame indoors.
