Rigid Signage

Rigid Signage

Which Rigid Substrate Is Right for Your Project?

The right substrate depends on where the sign lives, how long it needs to last, and the look you want. Acrylic is the workhorse for interior lobby and reception signs (1/4″ or 3/8″ thick, mounted with VHB tape or standoffs). Dibond ACM and aluminum are the permanent outdoor choice for facade and wayfinding. Rigid PVC fits short- to medium-term exterior use. Recent Chicago-area installs include acrylic dimensional logo letters for Big Blue Swim School at multiple locations and a halo-backlit acrylic sign for Clearly Pilates in Downers Grove.

Rigid Signage Tips for Chicago Offices and Lobbies

A rigid sign is only as good as its substrate spec, mount method, and install quality. The same logo on the wrong material or with the wrong mount will fail or look cheap. Here is what we tell every Chicago-area client during the consultation.

Match the substrate to the environment. Acrylic looks premium indoors but is not the right outdoor choice except in shielded covered locations. Dibond ACM and aluminum are the permanent outdoor substrates. Coroplast is short-term outdoor only.

Spec the mount before the sign. VHB tape works for lightweight interior signs on smooth drywall. Standoffs (1/2 to 1 inch) give a premium floating look. Mechanical fasteners are required for heavy exterior signs on masonry or metal.

How much do acrylic office signs cost in Chicago?

Standard interior acrylic lobby signs typically run $250 to $650. Dimensional logo walls with halo backlighting start around $1,000 and run to $1,500 for larger installs. A full multi-room office signage program ranges from $2,500 to $10,000 depending on building size and number of rooms.

What is the difference between acrylic, PVC, and aluminum signs?

Acrylic is a premium interior substrate with a glass-like finish. PVC is lightweight and paintable for short- to medium-term exterior wayfinding. Aluminum and Dibond ACM are the permanent outdoor substrates for 10-plus year exterior facade signs. Most buildings end up using a mix.

How are rigid signs mounted to walls?

VHB tape for lightweight interior signs, standoff mounting for premium floating logos, mechanical fasteners for heavy exterior signs. Mount method is specified at proof.

Where we install. Typical Chicago-area environments for our rigid signage work include corporate lobbies in the Oakbrook Terrace Tower, Highland Landmark along Butterfield Road, and Esplanade at Locust Point office buildings; retail storefronts along Ogden Avenue and Main Street in downtown Naperville and Hinsdale village center; medical and professional office buildings along the I-88 and I-355 corridors; and facility and industrial installs across the Ellsworth Industrial Park and DuPage Airport business corridor.
